Tollway Ramps Will Be Closed Sunday Morning

A handful of Dallas North Tollway entrance ramps will be closed early Sunday morning so workers can remove an overhead sign.
Northbound entrance ramps from Interstate 35E, Harry Hines Boulevard, McKinnon Street and Wycliff Avenue will be closed from midnight to 5 a.m., the North Texas Tollway Authority said. Drivers heading north may use ramps at Mockingbird Lane.
The southbound I-35E ramp will not be affected.
Old Red Courthouse Reopens Tuesday

Dallas County's once-neglected Old Red Courthouse will reopen Tuesday, restored to its 19th-century booster glory and housing a museum of artifacts ranging from Clyde Barrow's gun to Spanky McFarland's pants. About $23 million went into what officials intended as a rescue project, not only of the building itself but also of local history.
The sandstone-and-granite courthouse, which stood abandoned and waterlogged for more than a decade, will reappear as its builders envisioned – as an advertisement for a community that saw itself as a coming regional power. Inside, the Old Red Museum of Dallas County History & Culture will, backers hope, give residents of Dallas and its suburbs a sense of shared identity and will show visitors that something occurred here other than the assassination of a president.
The opening of the museum and rededication of the courthouse officially begins at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday with ceremonies on the building's Main Street side.

Leppert, Oakley Runoff Likely

Candidates who spent the most money on their campaigns also led the field in votes as results for the Dallas mayoral race began trickling in Saturday. Former construction company executive Tom Leppert drew more than a quarter of the votes and appeared likely headed to a June 16 runoff against District 3 City Council member Ed Oakley, who captured 20.6 percent of the votes, with almost all precincts reporting.
Farmers Branch Immigration Law Approved
With all precincts reporting Saturday, 67.6 percent of voters approved Ordinance 2903, while 32.4 were against.
City Council member Tim O’Hare, the driving force behind the ordinance, said he expects other cities to follow suit, and offered to lend them a hand. The ordinance was pushed by Mr. O’Hare, who tried to strike a chord with voters with his assertions that illegal immigrants are having a negative impact on neighborhoods, crime, property values and schools.
The fiery debate that drew charges of racism on both sides and thrust Mr. O’Hare, a native of the city, and Farmers Branch into the national spotlight. The turnout was so large that Dallas County set up seven locations for voting today; usually the city has only one polling place.
If approved by voters, it’s unlikely that the ordinance, which would go into effect on May 22, would be enforced anytime soon. Opponents, who outspent supporters of the ordinance more than 7-1 during the campaign, vowed renewed court challenges this week seeking injunctions against enforcement.

'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive on Saturday
The 15th annual 'Stamp Out Hunger' food drive, locally sponsored by Kroger Food Stores and conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, encourages residents to donate nonperishable food items.
The year's goal is to collect a million pounds of food in the Dallas area, said Willie Russell, customer relations coordinator for the Postal Service.
"I understand that hunger is real and everybody is not as prosperous as we'd like to think. That's not how it should be in America," Mr. Russell said. "That's why we are asking people to collect food across the area."
Last year, the letter carriers' campaign provided 89,438 pounds of food to the North Texas Food Bank. That number translates to more than 69,800 meals.
In addition, Dallas residents gave 145,497 pounds of food that was distributed to the food bank, shelters and food pantries. The Dallas postal district, which includes Allen, Canton, Duncanville and other suburbs, collected 745,793 pounds of food.
Gary Huddleston, director of consumer affairs for Kroger Food Stores, said this is the third year his company is participating in the event. The company is providing food, truck support to haul collected nonperishable items and paper bags for mail carriers to deliver to every mailbox across North Texas.
"We certainly want to be a part of the communities that we serve in," he said. "Any way we can stamp out hunger, we are willing to do it.

Harry Connick, Jr. at Nokia Theatre
Harry is on tour in support of his two new albums, Oh, My NOLA and Chanson du Vieux Carre. He and his band will play the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prarie at 8 pm on Saturday, May 12. For tickets, call Ticketmaster at 972-647-5700 or visit tickmaster.com.On "NOLA", Connick blends jazz, gospel, r&b, country and funk on songs associated with New Orleans musical idols such as Louis Armstrong ("Hello Dolly") and Raymond Myles ("Elijah Rock"). Connick adds some new twists to old favorites like Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)", which starts with a catchy New Orleans groove only to abruptly switch to medium tempo big band swing.
"Chanson" shines a spotlight on Connick's often overlooked jazz big band that boasts some scintillating ensemble playing, a powerful rhythm section, Connick's economical piano solos, and such distinctive soloists as trumpeter Leroy Jones and trombonist Lucien Barbarin. As an arranger, Connick demonstrates a deft touch whether on his own darker "Ash Wednesday" which uses lush orchestral colors a la Duke Ellington or Paul Barbarin's infectiously joyful "Bourbon Street Parade" which climaxes in swaggering brassy ensemble play.
A portion of the proceeds from both cds are being donated to the New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village. Connick and saxophonist Branford Marsalis launched the project to aid in building several hundred homes for displaced Hurricane Katrina musicians.
